Playing Poker For a Living – Is This a Realistic Goal?

Of all the forms of gambling poker is the only one that can really offer a person a realistic income. There are many people that have taken up poker as a way to make a living. We have all heard of the professional poker players that make millions of dollars a year playing the game. But these pros are not the only people that depend on poker for their livelihood. More and more people are making their living playing poker.

The Bankroll

Maybe the biggest obstacle for anyone that wishes to support themselves by playing online poker, or live poker for that matter, is creating a starting bankroll. A bankroll is the amount of money you have set aside to play. A bankroll should be about 5 to 10 times the amount of money you plan on bringing to the table at one time. If you wish to make a living playing poker you will need to build a good size bankroll first.

The Grind

You are not going to make a living playing poker by just winning one large pot, you will need to put in many hours a day. This can be tiring just like any other job. Playing 5 to 7 hours a day and staying focused is a hard task. To do this you really need to love the game. You must be patient, focused, and play solid poker ever hand if you are to be a profitable player. This can be hard even for the best players.

The Swings

Unlike other jobs playing poker for a living doesn’t allow you to know how much money you are going to be bring in. There will be times when you are on a winning streak and have extra money after you pay all your bills. Other times you may have a streak of bad luck and have no income coming in. It is important to understand even if you play the best poker in the world, you are going to have swings in your game and are not always going to bring in the same amount of money ever week, month, or even year.

It is important to keep this in mind and put money aside when you are winning to help you push through bad swings in your games. Don’t find yourself not being able to pay the rent because you spent last month’s winnings on a new boat.

Know the Game

If you are going to make poker your job, you have to be better at it then those you are playing against. This requires knowing the game inside and out. Read as many books and strategies about the game you can. Always be looking for the edge over your opponents.
